Sports Betting News: Punters Clamour to Bet on Euro 2024

According to IDnow, the start of the 2024 European Championship in Germany sparked a significant rise in verification requests compared to usual levels.

The opening weekend of the Euro 2024 tournament triggered a 750% increase in verification requests on football betting sites in Europe. 
 
The additional activity was higher than the number of requests made during the 2022 World Cup, highlighting the growing popularity of wagering on football. 
 
IDnow says the tournament represents ‘a huge opportunity for gambling platforms’ to build long-lasting relationships with sports bettors. 

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a warning to players about betting and has urged them to steer clear of wagering on any sports. 
 
Professional players are strictly prohibited from using betting apps and other platforms to wager on football, but can freely bet on other sports. 
 
However, Infantino wants players to focus on playing football rather betting on it and has promised to severely punish anyone who breaks the rules. 

A Royal Ascot punter pocketed an eye-watering £200,000 profit after Fairy Godmother produced a withering late run to win the Albany Stakes. 
 
The bettor wagered £100,000 at odds of 2/1 on the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly, but the bet looked doomed to fail as jockey Ryan Moore found trouble in running. 
 
However, Fairy Godmother flew after being switched to the stands’ rail on her way to a three-quarters of a length victory over Simmering.
