Royal Ascot 2023: Day 5 Betting News and Big Race Previews

Royal Ascot will enjoy its final hurrah for 2023 when Day 5 of the prestigious meeting is staged on Saturday afternoon.

The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes is the standout race on the card, but it is an extremely tricky puzzle for punters to unravel.

However, there are plenty of other excellent wagering opportunities available which could have horse racing betting sites running for cover.

With that in mind, we look at some of the top races on Saturday and assess the key betting angles to consider before placing your wagers.

Highlights

  • Hannon two-year-old should be competitive in the Chesham.
  • Covey could be tough to stop in the Jersey.
  • Ground will be crucial to the Hardwicke outcome

Goodwood Winner May Shine in the Chesham

Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Chesham Stakes on six previous occasions and has a couple of strong contenders in this year’s renewal.

Pearls and Rubies is the favourite for the race on most new betting sites after winning on her debut over five furlongs at Navan.

Content is also prominent in the market after running a fine debut race at Leopardstown under a tender ride by jockey Wayne Lordan.

However, Richard Hannon’s La Guarida could be the one to beat after producing an excellent performance to win on her second start at Goodwood.

The form of that race has received several boosts with the second, third and fourth all winning on their next outings.

Dettori Eyeing Jersey Success

Saturday will mark jockey Frankie Dettori’s final appearance at Royal Ascot and he will undoubtedly be eager to go out with a bang.

One of his best hopes of recording a winner is aboard Covey in the Jersey Stakes, with the horse a best-priced 9/4 on some betting apps to emerge victorious.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt has won three of his four career starts following a narrow defeat at Southwell on his debut.

Described by Barry Mahon of owners Juddmonte as ‘an unbelievably good physical specimen’, Covey is strongly fancied to run a big race this weekend.

He won the Betfred Silver Bowl Handicap at Haydock with contemptuous ease on his most recent run and looks to be a typical improver from the Gosden stable.

Ground Could Scupper Hukum’s Hopes

Ground conditions are the key to Hukum’s hopes of winning the Hardwicke Stakes and the weather may conspire against Owen Burrows’ stable star.

He suffered a career-threatening injury when winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom last term, but bounced back in style on his reappearance at Sandown last month.

Hukum defeated 2022 Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and should have no problem stepping up to 12 furlongs at Ascot.

However, if the ground remains on the firm side of good, Free Wind could be the value bet to follow up her recent success in a Group 2 event at York.

She is getting three pounds off her rivals and will likely attract plenty of interest at odds of 11/4 with several of the operators featured on this UK online bookmakers list.
