Open Championship 2023: Tournament Preview & Latest Betting News

The final golf major of the year takes centre stage this weekend as the prestigious Open Championship is staged at Royal Liverpool.

With plenty of leading sportsbooks offering free bets on The Open, punters have an ideal opportunity to boost their bankroll over the next few days.

The Open Championship is always one of the most exciting sports events of the year, so read on as we look at some of the key betting angles to consider before placing your wagers.

Highlights

  • Johnson looks excellent each-way value.
  • Spieth set for a solid weekend.
  • Lowry’s short-game looks in fine fettle.

Johnson Fancied for a Top Eight Finish

Dustin Johnson has an excellent record at The Open, recording five top ten finishes in 13 previous appearances in the tournament.

He was unlucky not to finish in the top five at Royal Liverpool in 2014, dropping three shots over the final two holes to slip down to a tie for 12th place.

On that basis, odds of 35/1 with several UK betting apps are a tempting proposition, particularly those offering each-way terms on the first eight places.

Johnson has improved as the season has progressed and is fancied to mount a strong challenge at Hoylake this weekend.

Spieth Could Sparkle on the Links

When it comes to tackling the unique challenges presented by links golf, you would be hard-pushed to find a better exponent than Jordan Spieth.

The 2017 Open champion has made the cut on all nine appearances in this tournament and looks overpriced at odds of 30/1 with numerous UK betting sites.

He has finished in the top 10 on five previous occasions – form which makes him a solid wager to be amongst the leaders on Sunday afternoon.

While Spieth was a little underwhelming at the Scottish Open last weekend, he looked in good nick playing practice holes on Tuesday and should be competitive in The Open.

Lowry the Man for the Big Occasion?

Shane Lowry highlighted his liking for the big stage by winning this tournament in 2019 and he has since posted several impressive results in majors.

While his long-game wasn’t quite up to scratch in the Scottish Open, his touch around the greens helped him finish in a tie for 12th position.

Lowry was ninth at Royal Liverpool in 2014, which suggests the odds of 50/1 on new betting sites are solid each-way value.

The Irishman will be desperate to cement his place in the European team for the 2023 Ryder Cup and looks nailed on to be in the mix this weekend.
