Cheltenham Festival 2024: Betting Trends for the Champion Chase

The second day of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival will offer punters plenty of chances to win the ongoing battle against the bookmakers.

The card is headlined by the Champion Chase - a fast and furious race which crowns the best two-mile chaser in the business.

We have studied the recent record books to uncover some key betting trends that we think will help you pick the winner of this year’s big race.

Highlights

  • Focus on the market leaders.
  • Arkle Chase is a useful form guide.
  • Pay heed to previous Festival runners.

Champion Chase Key Trends

  • 11/13 of the last winners were in the top three in the betting.
  • 8/10 winners finished in the first three on their previous run.
  • 10/12 winners have been aged 7-9.
  • 7/13 Arkle Chase winners from the previous season followed up in the Champion Chase.
  • 18/23 winners this century ran previously at the Festival.
  • 9/10 winners claimed victory in a Grade 1 chase.

El Fabiolo is a Banker Bet

El Fabiolo ticks all of the boxes in the aforementioned key trends and is impossible to oppose in this year’s Champion Chase.

He is unbeaten in nine races for trainer Willie Mullins and heads into his latest outing as one of the hottest favourites of the week on horse racing betting sites.

El Fabiolo finished five lengths clear of market rival Jonbon in the Arkle Chase last year and it would be a major shock if that form was reversed.

Jonbon won three Grade 1 races after that defeat, but produced a disappointing round of jumping when beaten by Elixir De Nutz in the Clarence House Chase in January.

Edwardstone will attract plenty of each-way support following his wide margin success in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, but he disappointed in this race last year.

Captain Guinness could be worth chancing on betting apps to run into a place having finished second behind Energumene last year.

He was no match for El Fabiolo at the Dublin Racing Festival, but could reward punters who are looking for some each-way value in the race.
