Championship Matchday 46 Preview: Five Teams Eyeing Two Play-Off Spots

The final round of matches in the Championship generally provide plenty of drama and that will undoubtedly be the case again this season.

All eyes will be on the race to reach the play-offs, with five teams still in with a chance of claiming the two remaining spots alongside Luton Town and Middlesbrough.

Read on as we take a look at the standout games on Matchday 46 in the Championship and assess some of the key betting angles to consider.

Highlights

  • Coventry City not there yet
  • Sunderland could be the value bet
  • Don’t rule out Blackburn Rovers

Coventry set for nervy final day

A run of one defeat in their last 15 league games has put Coventry City in pole position to end the season in the play-off places.

The oddsmakers at 10bet fancy them to get the job done, pricing them at odds of 1/10 to finish inside the top six after the final round of games.

However, the Sky Blues’ visit to Middlesbrough on Monday will not be easy, with Michael Carrick’s side boasting a formidable home record.

One point would be enough to guarantee Coventry’s place in the play-offs, but a defeat would open the door for Millwall, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion to overtake them.

While that combination of results is probably unlikely, it would be prudent for Coventry to fully focus on keeping their fate in their own hands.

Sunderland look a tempting proposition

Sunderland have also been in fine form in recent weeks, losing just one of their last ten matches to sit just outside the play-off places.

They now need to win at Preston North End on Monday and hope that Coventry are defeated or Millwall fail to beat Blackburn.

Each of those scenarios are possible, making the odds of 19/10 on offer with several new betting sites look a tempting proposition.

Value seekers may well be tempted by the 14/1 available on Sunderland to win promotion, particularly given their success in the League One play-offs last season.

Back-to-back promotions would be a remarkable achievement for the Wearside club and it would be foolish to dismiss their hopes of achieving the feat.

Blackburn still in with a chance

Eight games without a win have dented Blackburn’s promotion hopes, but they head into the final day still holding a chance of finishing inside the top six.

Their first order of business will be to beat a Millwall side that is usually tough to beat at home and who desperately need to win themselves.

If Blackburn pick up three points, they will need Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion to draw or lose against at Preston and Swansea City respectively.

While all three fixtures are undoubtedly tough, it doesn’t take the biggest leap of faith to imagine Rovers getting the combination of results they need.

The odds of 9/1 to finish inside the top six are a fair reflection of their chances and may tempt punters looking for a fun wager to keep them interested on Monday.
