Betting Trends for the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster

Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand in the 2024 St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, with his runners filling the top three spots in the ante-post market.

O’Brien has won the race seven times – a record which understandably has horse racing betting sites taking a cautious approach when pricing up the race.

We have studied the recent record books to uncover some key betting trends that we think will help you pick the winner of the 2024 St Leger Stakes.

Highlights

  • O’Brien trio could be tough to beat.
  • Ground conditions may be crucial.
  • Appleby aiming to upset the odds.

Key Trends for the St Leger Stakes

  • Nine of the last 12 winners have been in the top three in the betting.
  • 7/12 winners won on their last run before the St Leger.
  • 9/12 winners had their last run within 65 days.
  • 6/12 winners had at least one previous run over 1m 5f.
  • 10/12 winners were rated 109 or higher.
  • 12/12 winners had at least three runs that season.

O’Brien Trio are Difficult to Separate

Illinois was an impressive winner of the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot to spark talk that he would be the ideal type to tackle the St Leger.

He has subsequently finished second at Longchamp and York, but his lack of previous Group 1 successes makes him a risky betting proposition.

Jan Brueghel has also yet to record a top-level victory, but looks to be better value to win the race at odds of around 3/1 on several betting apps

He is unbeaten in three starts and is the type of late maturing stayer O’Brien has excelled with throughout his glittering career.

Grosvenor Square is another possible contender for the O’Brien stable, although there is a suspicion he may be rerouted to the Irish St Leger.

With that in mind, the door could be open for the Charlie Appleby-trained Ancient Wisdom to run into a place at a decent price.

The horse bounced back from his Epsom Derby disappointment with a front-running victory in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July.

He won the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster as a two-year-old and could be extremely dangerous if the going is soft or worse in the St Leger.
