Breakdown of the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship is the second of four major tournaments in men’s professional golf, taking place in May following the Masters in April. While some locations have repeated throughout the years, the tournament is hosted at a different venue each year, generally in the eastern part of the United States (New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc.).

In 2023, 156 players competed for the Wanamaker Trophy and a prize pool of $17.5 million ($3.15 million to the winner). This is a four-day event (Thursday - Sunday) with a 70 player (plus ties) cut made after two days. Scores for the final standings are added cumulatively across all four days. 18 holes are played each day adding to a total of 72.

The first PGA Championship was a match play event in 1916 and that format was followed for 42 years. For the past 66 years beginning in 1958, the tournament has been scored by stroke play. Next year will be the 106th edition of the event.

Up until 2019, this was the final major of the season taking place in August three weekend before Labour Day. The tournament now begins one weekend before Memorial Day.

What Makes the Best PGA Golf Betting Site?

Here are some of the most important factors we considered when choosing sportsbooks for PGA golf betting.

  • Number of PGA betting markets available

First and foremost, if you are looking for a sportsbook to bet on the PGA with you want to have the most betting options available to you.

The more options you have in the sports betting world the better, and not all sites provide the same wagering markets. We generally look for books that have large amount of live betting options, player props, and the ability to parlay wagers together from the same event.

  • Golf betting bonuses

Welcome bonuses are highly advertised by sports betting companies, but the strength of the offers they offer sporadically to existing customers is much less known.

Thankfully for you, we have a team of experts with years of experience who factor this into their ranking process. Some sportsbooks will offer a small amount of bet credits ($5) to be placed on an outright winner for a major. This is an example of a bonus with essentially no downside, so make sure to take advantage of these.

  • Golf live streaming

This is one of the more rare features in the industry, but it can really set a sportsbook over the top. Some companies will just require you to maintain a minimum account balance to live stream PGA events on their site, while others will require you to place an actually wager on the tournament.

Either way, this can save you money on expensive streaming services and potentially earn you money in the process.

  • Live betting and cash outs

A feature that has become uniform across all top betting planforms in recent years, live betting has made wagering opportunities in golf seem endless.

Odds are updated by the second and you can bet on each individual hole. This eliminates the need to rush and get your wagers in before your players tee off in the morning if you forgot the night before.

An extended feature of live betting is the ability to cash out of your bets for a smaller net loss or smaller net gain. This is not always the most optimal option, but if you play your cards right and know when not to get greedy it can save you a lot of money in the long run.

  • Deposit and withdrawal methods

Sports betting shouldn’t be stressful, so if depositing and withdrawing is causing you issues, it’s time to look elsewhere. We highly value sportsbooks with a large varieties of banking options and quick processing times.

Popular PGA Golf Betting Markets

If you are looking to bet on the PGA Championship but are unsure where to start, here are some of the most popular wagers placed in golf.

  • Outright winners - The simplest wager there is in golf, and outright wager is a bet on who you believe will win the tournament. This is generally a bit of a shot in the dark, so opening odds are always on the plus (+) side of the odds.
  • Round leaders - The top PGA golf betting sportsbooks will provide the option to bet on the winner of each individual day of a four-day tournament. Previous days are not considered, and all golfers are essentially given a clean slate for the day with this betting option.
  • Props - With golf being an individual sport, there is a large amount of prop betting opportunities. You can bet on players to make the cut, top finishers based on nationality, if there will be hole in one, etc.
  • Placement - Picking the tournament winner is incredibly difficult to do in a field of 156 golfers. Thankfully, betting on winners is not the only option when it comes to placement. The top PGA sportsbooks will provide odds for top 5,10,20, and 30 finishes.
  • Matchups - Most golf events are stroke play, meaning there are no true head-to-head matchups. Luckily for you, sportsbooks provide their own matchups and essentially create money line odds for golf. Players are generally either placed in groups of three or pinned head-to-head on betting apps with odds provided for who will score the lowest.
  • Per Hole - With 72 total holes and 156 golfers at the PGA Championship, it is safe to say you will have your fair share of betting opportunities from sportsbooks that offer odds per hole.

PGA Golf Betting Tips

Oddsmakers are sharp so gaining an edge and winning in the golf betting world is no easy task. To help improve your odds, here are our top PGA golf betting tips.

  • Look at past performances at the course

Knowing how a player has performed in the past at a particular course is one of the most important statistics to know heading into a major.

Certain golf courses favour specific types of golfers, causing some of the top ranked players in the world to struggle and some of the lower ranked players to excel. We recommend you be warry of small sample sizes, but heavily factor large samples at specific venue into your betting decisions.

  • Look at recent performances

Golf is arguably the most difficult sport in the world to master so naturally, even the top players in the world will go through their ups and downs.

It is a game of rhythm and precision, so playing your best golf heading into a major is of utmost importance. We recommend highly factoring in recent performances before placing a wager.

  • Look at course conditions

Some golfers historically play better under certain conditions. Maybe the odds for one of the top golfers in the world look incredibly favourable, but it is an incredibly windy day, and he has a history of posting high numbers under these conditions.

This may require you to do some digging statistically, but you need every edge you can get in the betting world.

  • Hedge your bets

If your pretournament outright wager is looking good and it is coming down to a small group for the lead, this is a great opportunity to hedge your bet.

Essentially, this means placing small wagers on the other few players in contention to ensure either your money back, or a small profit if your player ultimately does not win.

  • Take advantage of live betting

Live betting is a great opportunity to find favourable odds based on outcomes that have already occurred. Let’s say a golfer you are incredibly confident in has an unlucky start – this could be a great time to jump in on the action at more favourable odds.
