Aintree Racecourse, just outside of Liverpool city, first opened on July 7th 1829, and it has been the venue for top-class horse racing ever since.
The Grand National Festival is the principal event held at this venerable course, and the Grand National itself has been run at Aintree since 1839. Red Rum won the National three times – a feat which has yet to be matched – and this most famous of race horses was buried near the winning post in 1995.
Today there are three separate courses at Aintree: The Grand National Course, The Mildmay Course and the Hurdles’ Course. The Mildmay Course was created as a ‘training’ course for horses not yet ready to tackle the Grand National circuit, while the Hurdles’ Course is the oldest of the three.
The Grand National is run over 4 miles and 2 1/2 furlongs and includes 30 jumps, including the infamous Beeches Brook and The Chair. The Grand National Festival takes place every April, and you will be able to find all the latest news and betting tips here at the Mansion Blog ahead of the big event.
