The Epsom Derby was first run in 1780 and serves as the middle leg of the Triple Crown, starting off with the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and ending with St Leger at Doncaster. It is always run on the first Saturday of June each year and is open to three-year-old colts only.

The Derby has been won by some of the best horses we have ever seen, these include Golden Horn, Sea The Stars, Galileo, Shergar, Mill Reef and Nijinsky.

Lester Piggott holds the record for the most wins in the race with 9. His first win was on Never Say Die in 1954 and his final win came 29 years later on Teenoso in 1983.

Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer with 8 Derby wins to his name. He won his first Derby in 2001 with one of best horses ever in Galileo. Aidan and his son Joseph became the first farther-son/trainer-jockey combination to win the race with Camelot in 2012.
