The Triumph Hurdle is a British National Hunt hurdle race held every year as part of the world-famous Cheltenham Festival. As a Grade 1 race, it’s a major event in the yearly hurdles calendar. It’s also the highest-profile event contested exclusively by juveniles.
The race was first inaugurated in 1939 and is currently sponsored by JCB. Traditionally, the JCB Triumph Hurdle has opened the final day of the Festival. This year, its place in the line-up may be in question due to the addition of the new Mares’ Chase.
Nevertheless, the Triumph Hurdle never fails to draw crowds. It’s an opportunity to see great juvenile horses competing at the highest level.
Triumph Hurdle: Tips and Predictions
Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
Irish eyes have been smiling for most of the week in Cheltenham and in the form of Zanahiyr and Quilixios they have excellent Triumph Hurdle claims. The pair have impressed at home and are joined by Willie Mullins’ duo Haut En Couleurs and Tax For Max in a four-strong raiding party.
Quilixios might get the better of his former stablemate but Alan King’s TRITONIC looks the one to be on. The 99-rated Flat performer has quickly taken to hurdling and his Grade 2 Adonis win at Kempton was special. His raw speed can settle this with so little jumping late in the race and give his trainer a third Triumph Hurdle win.
Enda McElhinney’s Selection: Tritonic
2021 Winner: Quilixios (Rachael Blackmore) 7/4
