The Marsh Novices’ Chase is a National Hunt race held every year as part of the Cheltenham Festival. Also known as the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase, the Grade 1 race marks the start of St. Patrick’s Day. It’s the first race of the day, directly before the Pertemps Network Final.
The race was established in 2011, as a showcase for novice chasers. It was initially sponsored by Jewson, until 2014. That year, the chase was upgraded to Grade 1, and JLT’s sponsorship deal began. It became known as the Marsh Novices’ Chase after JLT and Marsh merged.
Marsh Novices’ Chase: Tips and Predictions
Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
Novice chasers have been all the rage already this week and ENVOI ALLEN will be keen to take centre stage to himself here. He’s 2-2 at this Festival already and remains unbeaten in his 11 starts under rules. He’s done nothing wrong over fences but his doubters would suggest he hasn’t beaten much. That’s hardly his fault, and he can be relied on to make it business as usual here.
Chantry House may emerge as the biggest danger, with doubts about Shan Blue on this track. Asterion Forlonge is something of a liability jumping-wise but last year’s Champion Hurdle second Darver Star might be one at a massive price to run well.
Enda McElhinney’s Selection: Envoi Allen
