The Stable Plate Handicap Chase takes place every year during the Cheltenham Festival, the second richest meeting in the National Hunt calendar. It’s a prominent Grade 3 steeplechase race.
Created in 1951, this event was originally called the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup, after the late Baron Mildmay. He was an amateur National Hunt jockey decorated for riding several winners at Cheltenham. Today, the race is sponsored by Brown Advisory and the Merriebelle Stable.
Like all Cheltenham Festival races, the event draws massive interest from punters worldwide. As a handicap race, it offers a fairly level field.
Plate Handicap Chase: Tips and Predictions
Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
A minefield for punters with 23 contenders for Plate glory. The Shunter seeks a big bonus if he can win but he had a hard race only 12 days ago in Scotland and Emmet Mullins’ charge might be returning to the well too soo.
A Wave To The Sea and Farclas are other major players for Ireland but Neil Mulholland’s DEAD RIGHT could be primed for this assignment. He’s been off since a win at Market Rasen in September but goes very well fresh and will love the drying ground.
Tom Scudamore is a positive booking and the yard has been in excellent recent form. David Pipe knows how to bag this race and veteran Eamon An Cnoic isn’t without a chance being rated 7lb lower than when running fourth in this two years ago. He was a hurdles winner last month.
Enda McElhinney‘s Selection: Dead Right
