Perry Barr only schedules open racing once a month, which is a shame as it tends to attract a good quality of dog.
Thursday evening is no exception to that with a card filled with nice types who look worth following in the second half of 2021.
Daisy Starting to Flower Into Top Stayer
A fascinating stayers contest at 19.51 with the inside pair from the same litter. Preference is for Jimmy Gaskin’s Hather Daisy over her brother Hather Duke. She absolutely skated up at Doncaster last week when given a drop in class.
She was far from disgraced when pitched into the TV Trophy on just her third start for this kennel, missing out on a place in the £10,000 decider by half a length. There should be more to come and this is another winnable contest for her.
Take Ballymac to Rock the House
Gaskin should get his night off to a winning start courtesy of Ballymac Rocker in the 18.59. He has been in great heart at his home track of Doncaster, winning an open and a pair of A1’s in his last four starts.
He clocked a solid time on his first look at Perry Barr in a trial on Monday and in a race with not a lot of early pace from his fellow wide seeds, he can turn handy and see out this 480m trip best.
From Dortmund to Birmingham
The impression that Kid Haaland gave in Ireland was of a stayer in the making. New trainer Carol Weatherall wastes no time stepping the pup up to six bends on his U.K race debut at 19.16.
He has improved in each of his four trials for this kennel and the first try at a longer trip can see him in a better light again. He looked rather green and lacking track craft in Ireland so hopefully, he has grown up a bit with this new handler.
Laurels Semi-Finalist Set to Relish Return
The 20.21 sees Savana Cody back at Perry Barr having made it no further than the first round of the Derby. This track clearly suited Diane Henry’s son of Ballymac Vic when making the semi-final stage of the Category 1 Laurels in April.
He will need to be on his toes when the lids open as the dog outside him in three has plenty of early pace but he should prove too strong for that one late in the day.
Norris Can Find Himself Chucked In
A puppy sprint is not the most obvious place for a bet but Barrie Draper looks to hold the key to the one at 18.41 with Magna Norris. The winner of a top grade affair at Sheffield last time in a slick 16.10, he will come on for his first look at this track on Monday.
A draw in six is probably not where he would want to be in an ideal world but the five is going to be moving left from the lids and a repeat of his Sheffield win would make him hard to beat.
