We’ve all got our views on which teams became the greatest Premier League champions. Here’s our five of the best.
1. Manchester City (2017-18)
This was the season when City set the bar insanely high under Pep Guardiola.
It was their third Premier League title, clinched with five rounds of matches to go, with Vincent Kompany and his men becoming the first team to reach the magical 100-point mark.
They’d gone top of the table in September following a 6-0 romp at Watford – one of six occasions they’d score five or more in a match – and never relinquished that lead.
They also scored 106 goals, earning them the nickname The Centurions, and set records galore, storming to the title by a massive 19-point margin.
2. Liverpool (2019-20)
The season that took almost a year to complete after a three-month Covid break, and one where Liverpool finally got their hands on the Premier League trophy.
As with City two seasons earlier, Jurgen Klopp’s men got the job done quickly – seven games to go – and ruthlessly – they finished 17 points clear of their Manchester rivals.
At one stage, the Reds, inspired by their electric front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, had an amazing 25-point lead and again, records tumbled before them, including setting a benchmark of 24 consecutive home wins.
3. Arsenal (2003-04)
Arsene Wenger’s finest hour came in 2003-04 when he guided Arsenal to the first-ever unbeaten Premier League season, a feat which earned his team the title The Invincibles.
They scored more goals than any other side, conceded the least, dotted up by 11 points and, driven on by inspirational skipper Patrick Vieira, simply overpowered all their rivals.
Thierry Henry grabbed most of the headlines with his 30-goal return but this was the ultimate team effort from a side who simply wouldn’t be beaten.
4. Manchester United (1998-99)
A year after winning nothing, Fergie’s men bounced back in style with the treble, fending off Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in a gruelling title spat.
United didn’t lose a league game from Christmas but couldn’t shake off Arsenal and Chelsea.
With a dream midfield featuring the irrepressible Roy Keane alongside the likes of Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, and boasting new 18-goal top scorer Dwight Yorke, United outstayed the rest. And within ten days of clinching the league title they had also won the FA Cup and Champions League.
5. Manchester City (2018-19)
This was the year of a title fight like none we had witnessed before, two teams going toe to toe for months with City eventually pipping Liverpool, whose 97-point haul somehow just wasn’t enough.
Liverpool won their last nine matches of the season, City their last 14, a stunning show of strength from the two best teams in the land.
City matched their record of 32 Premier League wins and didn’t fail to find the net between December 8 and the end of the season, Sergio Aguero topping their scoring charts with 21.
