With its’ 30 teams and 162 game season, Major League Baseball can throw up some interesting statistics over the course of a campaign or two, so we have listed the three biggest winning streaks for one MLB team over another before listing two current streaks to keep an eye on in the coming season.
23 games – Baltimore Orioles over Kansas City Royals
The longest winning streak for one team over another in MLB history dates from May 1969 to August 1970 as the Orioles repeatedly had the Royals’ number.
Kansas City were an expansion team finding their feet and Baltimore took full advantage as they won three straight AL pennants from 1969 to 1971.
20 games – Cleveland Indians over Detroit Tigers
A recent addition to the list, the Indians’ dominance over the Tigers lasted from April 2019 to August 2020.
Detroit became just the sixth team since 1900 to lose 114 games in a season and Cleveland were on hand to capitalise, although they missed out on the play-offs for the first time since 2015, despite their upper hand over the Tigers.
19 games – New York Yankees over Baltimore Orioles
In the era of teams tanking, it’s not a surprise to see another recent streak, the Yankees had the better of their division rival Orioles from April 2019 to September 2020.
New York finished 49 games ahead of Baltimore in the standings in the 2019 season so it’s not hard to see where their dominance came from.
Gleyber Torres hit 13 homers against the Orioles, the most for a player against one team in a season since Lou Gehrig hit 14 against Cleveland in 1936.
With preparations for the new season building up, here is a look at the two biggest current streaks that could increase further in 2023.
10 games – Los Angeles Dodgers over Chicago Cubs
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the dominant force in the NL West for the best part of a decade, winning nine of the last 10 divisional titles so it is not hard to see how they are the team who have the two current longest winning streaks over individual teams in the MLB.
LA have won their last 10 games against the Chicago Cubs, with their last defeat to those opponents coming in June 2021.
The pair first meet this year on April 15 with Chicago hoping to finally snap the streak.
9 games – Los Angeles Dodgers over Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds are another team that have been unfortunate enough to suffer the National League dominance of the Dodgers, losing the last nine meetings between the pair.
The Reds beat the Dodgers 3-1 in September 2021 but since then have had no success, with the closest they have come to getting a victory a 3-1 defeat in April 2022.
This streak will be preserved until at least June 7 when Cincinnati welcome the 2020 World Series champions to the Great American Ballpark.
