Cheltenham Festival Day 1: Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

The Cheltenham Festival is the focal point of the jumps racing season in Britain and Ireland, an occasion unparalleled in racing.

The curtain raiser on the Tuesday afternoon is the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, a two-mile speed test where the best up-and-coming hurdlers from Britain and Ireland locks horns. Willie Mullins has won the race a record six times, though only once since 2015. Shiskin scored for Nicky Henderson (his fourth win in the race) in 2019.

Few races in the calendar generate more hype and debate, given the status of the Supreme as the Cheltenham Festival opener.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle: Tips and Predictions

Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.

Appreciate It bids to give Willie Mullins a record-extending seventh win in the Festival curtain-raiser and has already bagged two Grade 1s in Ireland this season, dispatching the likes of Ballyadam and Irascible. The latter could go well for a place at a massive price.

Paul Townend’s mount is much-respected but Tolworth Hurdle winner METIER gets the nod for the opener. With a small field, his speed could be crucial and he showed quite a gear-change in testing ground in the January success at Sandown so the rain falling won’t concern him. He bag this for trainer Harry Fry.
