Cheltenham Festival Day 1: Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

The Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle has been part of the Cheltenham experience for 15 years and, in 2021, it has a new home on day one of the meeting.

Often known as the ‘Fred Winter’ – who died in 2004 and had ridden 17 Cheltenham winners in his career and trained 28 more – the race was formerly run on Gold Cup Day, but has now switched to the Tuesday.

This was a race that British trainers enjoyed a stranglehold on after Paul Nolan and Nina Carberry won the inaugural running in 2005, but the tide has swayed with all three winners since 2018 coming over from Ireland.

Paul Nicholls (2010, 2015, 2016) and Gordon Elliott (2013, 2018, 2020) are men to watch having saddled three winners each. The race for four-year-olds is run over two-miles-and-a-furlong and will now be the penultimate race on Festival Tuesday, Day 1.

Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle: Tips and Predictions

Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.

Houx Grix has been all the rage for Paul Nicholls in recent weeks and should go well but his Auteuil success in the autumn was only by a neck from HOMME PUBLIC and that rival is 3lb better off today.

Oliver Greenall’s charge won well at Market Rasen last month and should go well at a solid price.

Elham Valley and Tinnahalla are others to monitor, along with Youmdor and Sage Advice as possible each-way contenders.
