The Champion Bumper is a Grade 1 National Hunt race open to horses aged between four to six-years-old. The race is held each year in March and it’s also viewed as one of the most distinguished on the racing calendar as many of the horses go on to do showjumping. Competing in the Champion Bumper allows them to run on the flat if they haven’t done so before.
The Champion Bumper Race: Tips and Predictions
Note: the predictions below refer to the 2021 running of this race – preview will be updated closer to the beginning of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
If KILCRUIT is as good as his last month’s Leopardstown win looked, he’ll take some halting in a race trainer Willie Mullins has dominated through the years.
Sir Gerhard is the biggest threat on paper but, despite recently joining Team Mullins, Paul Townend spurns him. That could be worth noting.
Another Mullins runner, Grangee, is not discounted, while Denise Foster’s Three Stripe Life is another part of a very strong Irish hand in the finale.
Enda McElhinney‘s Selection: Kilcruit
2021 Winner: Sir Gerhard (Rachael Blackmore) 2/1
