Horse Racing Tips, Predictions & Best Bets – 24/05

MansionBet - Horse Racing Best Bets

Friday’s race card is packed wall-to-wall with exciting events across the UK and Ireland with seven meetings at Bath, Goodwood, Haydock, Hereford, Pontefract, Curragh and Downpatrick to pick through. Yesterday, our three selections returned a placed horse when Postitiva finished third at Catterick off a starting price of 20/1 and another winner thanks to Kilmurry Jj’s success at Limerick. Check out our latest horse racing betting tips below.

Best Tip #1:  Billaway – Downpatrick, 19:35

Billaway has been a major player in hunter chases over the last few years, winning at both the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals in 2022 and earning a triumph in last year’s renewal of today’s race.

Unbeaten on his last two outings at Downpatrick, he still has plenty to offer at the age of 12 and the veteran could deliver the goods for Willie Mullins again in the Dennison Commercials Hunters Chase.

Vaucelet – who finished second behind Billaway in last year’s renewal – is another high-calibre hunter and though he hasn’t been hitting the heights of late, he can offer some competition today.

Private Ryan meanwhile, could be worth a market check on horse racing betting sites. He has it all to prove over this trip, however, he is one of the younger runners today and looked the part when winning at Punchestown earlier this month.

Best Tip #2: Wild Tiger – Goodwood, 16:10

Wild Tiger won while wearing cheekpieces for the first time at Yarmouth on May 4th in a Class 4 race over 7f on his return to British soil after some outings in Dubai, and the lightly raced 5-year-old could come up trumps again at Goodwood.

He has incurred a 7lb rise, though his last win was comfortable enough to suggest that shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. The booking of track specialist Oisin Murphy could be significant.

Be Frank is another name for shortlists in the WH Epic Boost Handicap. Another lightly-raced entry, the 4-year-old was a winner over 6f twice last season and was solid enough over 7f when last seen at Newmarket (4th).

Be Frank drops down a grade today and could be a contender as a result. Smoky Mountain, who is a consistent sort, could be a viable each-way option at a bigger price.

Best Roughie: Ferrybank – The Curragh, 20:20

Ferrybank has been really motoring this year and though he has done all of his good work in 2024 on AW so far, he has credentials today on turf. The 6-year-old ran to second spot at Leopardstown on May 17th on that surface and though he is up 3lb today, he can push again.

Ferrybank finished first or second in three of his four races on all-weather tracks before his strong showing at Leopardstown.

Passionate has also been attracting plenty of interest on sports betting apps in the ante-post market. He came close to scoring on his handicap debut at Gowran on May 9th, but then went one better five days later to win by six lengths at Killarney. A 13lb rise today is significant, though he should be well in the mix again today.

Stats and Insights

  • The track at Downpatrick is littered with tight turns and undulations, so it’s usually wise to steer clear of the bigger horses with longer strides there. Prolific trainer Gordon Elliott has been a top performer at Downpatrick over the last five years, posting 39 wins from 200 races there.
  • Goodwood provides a testing setting for most types due to the awkward turns and undulations laid out there. Jockeys William Buick and Oisin Murphy – both of whom will ride at Goodwood today – have both enjoyed a good amount of success there over the last five years.
  • There is a stiff uphill finish to conquer at The Curragh and that can favour the galloping horses that are equipped with better stamina. Jockey Colin Keane, who has five rides at The Curragh today, has posted 70 wins there over the last half a decade. Trainer AP O’Brien has led the way in that department.
